Back in the park for the winter season, should be a good one. The Mammoth Hot Springs variation on a door greeter crossed the road in front of me not two hundred yards from my door. It`s good they aren’t much larger than a small horse!

Season’s over here at Mammoth Hot Springs, the elk know it and are reclaiming some of their favorite haunts. Me, I’m goin’ off the grid for a couple months – have fun all!

I’m only guessing at what’s on those tines, but this guy is laying back for now while a younger, smaller bull is displaying most of the activity and aggression – in the end I’m thinkin it’s all about attitude with the elk rut, and the younger bull has that in spades.
He has been so active that it’s been hard to get a shot of him, stays off the location during the day – probably to avoid the traffic he isn’t used to, then makes a nuisance of himself all night :(

Seems I encroached upon the royal domains of two very ornery critters today, Big Bird here simply wasn’t giving up the trail to me or anyone else. I don’t understand the behavior with these birds, but it’s not the first one I’ve seen do this, this one let me bushwhack not two feet to it’s right and reacted with only an acute look of disdain before going back to it’s business.
The whistle pig, on the other hand, simply had no tolerance for my presence at all. I was on it’s domain and it wanted me to move on – now! It’s living pretty high up on the trail and there isn’t a lot of traffic there yet, but there will be; it may be a long summer for that one.
