Oh My

11 September 04

There exists a creature both betwixt and betwain,
In your jewelry box it goes and snarls your chains!

In a place unfound this creature betrays,
All sense of within as it seeks and preys.

Between the cracks it shuffles your stacks,
And beneath another your desired stays,
Forever unseen it brushes away
All trace of the trail lest you find your way.

Neither Leprechaun nor Snark would it be,
Nor twee as such would it be to thee.

Neither hunt, nor prey, nor Pot’o Gold.
No sign would it give, young – or old.

But it breathes and is – I know!
It must be, or how so?
Oh my, Oh my, where did it go?

A knot applied, a knot denied,
My oh My how times flies!

It was there a moment ago, decide,
Loose it seems, but why?

If asked, the children would say,
That the sock monster lives in her room in this way;
Old she would be and a fright would appear.

If asked she would say,
With a grin and a leer,
“It takes so little to keep the children away.”

How so?, how so?, it was here but a moment ago!

There exists a creature both betwixt and betwain,
In your jewelry box it goes and snarls your chains!

…oh my!
