Stop the Barbie Dolls?

28 April 08

Iranian official warns against importing Barbie dolls.

Perhaps we should make a deal with these folks, if they will stop with the nuke programs and the heroin production (and I realize that most of the source is Afghanistan) we’ll stop trying to destroy their culture with Barbie Dolls!

  1. Rick, this makes sense. I wonder if you’ve ever heard Randy Stonehill’s song, Queen of the Barbie Nation?

  2. I understand the potency of the symbol, and find it, admittedly, darkly amusing that it poses such a threat to an entire culture.
I am a disenchanted catholic by upbringing, and this as a result of irreconcilable differences with the guilt generation. I have always been unwilling to accept that anyone comes from the factory with something wrong about it built in. The phrase “It’s a mystery son” was always the final answer to my questions and in the end it was never satisfactory. I have since then come to apply very much the same attitude toward the term “Western Civilization”. We, that would be the U.S., do not raise our children well.
The Iranians are smuggling these dolls into their own country to fulfill a need, and that says something about the “Mystery” of where the real problem is. If that need were addressed properly to begin with, the doll would simply be a doll.
