Wicked Simple

I once worked in a hotel where the floors were numbered 1 thru 12, then 14, for 13 elevator buttons. The rooms on the top floor were numbered with a 4 digit number beginning with 14 _ _. I could understand superstitions having an effect on business. I could understand making allowances for folks that would be bothered by staying on the 13th floor. I could even understand the lame mechanism of skipping the number to avoid discomfiting them
What I couldn’t avoid was the wicked simple question – why build the place with 13 floors to begin with? Amazing what can get you in trouble sometimes!
